Associate Contacts Using Custom Labels
Contact associations connect related records and say how they are related. Common examples are Spouse, Colleague, Parent and Child, Manager and Employee, or Buyer and Seller. You can also link contacts to custom object records such as properties, vehicles, or policies.
Label types
- Single label uses the same name on both sides, such as Colleague.
- Pair of labels uses a different name on each side, such as Manager and Employee.
Create an association
- Go to Settings > Objects.
- Open Contacts and select the Associations tab.
- Click Create Association.
- Choose the object to link to, such as Contacts or a custom object.
- Choose a single label or a pair, and name the labels.
- Save.
Link two records
- Open a contact.
- Find the Associations (or Related Objects) section.
- Click Add, pick the label, and search for the record to link.
- Save. The link shows on both records.
To remove a link, open either record, find the association, and choose Remove. The records themselves are not deleted.
Set limits
You can limit how many records can be linked with a label. For example, a Spouse label can be limited to one. Edit the association in Settings > Objects to set the limit. Limits are enforced per label.
Use associations in workflows
Supported workflow actions can act on associated records, for example updating a related contact or custom object. The records and associations need to exist first, unless the action creates them.
