Meta Marketing Messages on Messenger
Meta Marketing Messages lets you send paid promotional messages on Facebook Messenger to people who've opted in to hear from your Page.
This feature is in beta. Meta charges your connected ad account for every marketing message delivered.
Before you start
- Your business is in a country where Meta offers Marketing Messages.
- You have a Facebook Page and a Meta ad account in the same Meta business portfolio, and you're a business admin there.
- That Facebook Page is connected in Settings > Integrations > Facebook.
- The ad account has a valid payment method.
- At least one contact has accepted your Messenger opt-in request. Only those contacts can receive campaigns.
1. Connect your Meta business
- Go to Settings > Integrations > All Integrations, find Facebook Login for Business, and click Connect.
- On the External Connection tab, click the connect button.
- Review what the connection allows in Meta's window and continue.
- Pick your business portfolio, then the Page and ad account to use. Click Next. If they don't appear, check you picked the portfolio that owns them.
- Choose whether Meta should invite people to subscribe for you. Both invite options are on by default.
- Click Finish. The connection shows as active on the External Connection tab.
If you see Payment method is missing!, add a payment method to the ad account in Meta.
2. Collect opt-ins with a workflow
Meta only lets you send marketing messages to people who opted in.
- Go to Automation > Workflows and create a workflow from scratch.
- Add the Customer Replied trigger with the filter Reply channel = Facebook messenger.
- Right after it, with no wait step, add the Send opt-in message action:
- Title: the topic people subscribe to, like "Promotions and Updates".
- Sub text (required): what they're agreeing to receive.
- Image (optional): JPG, PNG, or GIF.
- CTA label (required): the button text, like "Allow messages".
- In the workflow Settings, keep Allow re-entry off so each contact only gets the request once.
- Publish the workflow.
The contact must have messaged your Page within the last 24 hours when they reach this step, or the request is skipped. Meta also rejects a second request with the same title to the same person.
When someone taps Allow messages, they become a subscriber of that Page. Only the opt-in request adds subscribers. You can't import or tag people in.
Check the workflow's Execution logs tab to see who was sent the request. Executed means it was sent, not that they accepted. Lots of Skipped entries usually mean people reach the step more than 24 hours after messaging you.
3. Subscribers and opt-outs
- Subscribed: accepted the request and can be picked as a recipient.
- Opted out: tapped Manage or the opt-out link in a message and chose not to get updates.
Meta doesn't tell FunnelStreams right away when someone opts out. They may still appear as a recipient in your next campaign. Meta won't deliver to them and won't charge you, and they're then removed from future recipient lists. A gap between total recipients and delivered messages often means some people opted out.
4. Create a campaign
- Go to Marketing > Marketing Messages and click Create a campaign.
- Name the campaign (only you see this) and pick the Facebook Page and ad account.
- Choose a budget type, Daily or Lifetime, and enter the amount in the smallest unit of your currency, such as cents for USD.
- Enter a Title and Description.
- Under Configure CTA, choose 1, 2, or 3 buttons and give each a label and a link. Click Save and Continue.
- Click Select recipients and choose subscribers. To send later, tick Schedule for later and pick a time.
- Click Send campaign.
Meta usually takes 30 to 60 minutes to start delivering. Drafts can be finished later with the pencil icon. Check delivery and results in the campaign's statistics.
