Email Preference Management

Preference management lets each contact choose which kinds of email they want, instead of only unsubscribing from everything. It helps you respect their choices and stay compliant.
When a contact opts out of a preference type, they're left out of every campaign assigned to that type, even if they're in the campaign's audience.

Before you start

  • Turn on Preference Management in Labs. Once turned on, it can't be turned off.
  • It works with the built-in FunnelStreams email service. It doesn't work with outside SMTP providers. If you switch to one later, saved preferences are kept, but you can't use the preference center.

1. Create preference types

Go to Settings > Preference Management Hub and create the categories you send, such as Newsletters, Promotions, or Product Updates.

2. Add the preferences link to your emails

  • Turn on Add Preference Management Link to the Footer to add it to every email automatically.
  • Or insert it yourself from the email Custom Values.

3. Assign a type to each campaign

When you build or edit an email campaign, choose its preference type.

4. Audiences filter automatically

Anyone who opted out of that type is skipped when the campaign sends.

5. Manage a contact's preferences

You can view and change a contact's preferences on their contact details page.

6. Resubscribe a contact

To resubscribe someone to a type they left, you must give a valid legal basis, such as their documented consent.

7. Contacts can change their minds

Contacts can open the preferences link in any email footer and click Update Preferences to change their choices.

8. See changes in Conversations

Every preference change, whether made by the contact or your team, is logged in the contact's conversation.

Good to know

  • Preferences are saved per contact.
  • A contact is only set to Do Not Disturb for email when they've unsubscribed from every preference type.
