Set Default Values for Custom Values in Emails

Why defaults matter

Personalizing with custom values such as {{contact.first_name}} makes emails feel personal. But if a contact's field is empty, the email shows a blank ("Hi ,"). A default value fills that gap, for example "Hi there,".

Add a default value

  1. Open your email in the Email Builder.
  2. Click into a text block and insert a custom value from the Custom Values menu.
  3. Click the inserted value (or the settings next to it) and enter a Default value.
  4. Save the email.
The default only appears when the contact's field is empty. Contacts with data see their own value.

Tips

  • Keep defaults natural: "there", "friend" or "your business".
  • Set a default for every custom value in subject lines and preview text too.
  • Use Preview with a test contact that has empty fields to check how it reads.
  • Defaults are saved per email, so set them in each template you reuse.
