Build Recipient Segments for Email Campaigns

What a segment is

A recipient segment is a group of contacts built from conditions, such as tags, smart lists, specific contacts or email engagement. Contacts that match when the campaign sends are included. You can save segments and reuse them in other campaigns.

Build a segment

  1. Go to Marketing → Emails → Campaigns and create or open a campaign.
  2. Click Send or Schedule.
  3. In the recipients (To) area, select Build Segment.
  4. Add conditions:
  5. Tag is / Tag is not
  6. Smart List is
  7. Contact is / Contact is not (choosing several contacts means any of them)
  8. Segment is / Segment is not, for example "Engaged in last 30 days"
  9. Join conditions with AND (all must be true) or OR (any can be true).
  10. Save the segment if you want to reuse it, then finish scheduling.

How the logic works

Conditions are read from top to bottom. The result of the first condition is the starting group, and each next condition narrows it (AND) or adds to it (OR).
  • Example 1: contacts with Tag A or Tag B, but not Tag C: Tag is A OR Tag is B, AND Tag is not C.
  • Example 2: contacts in both Smart List A and Smart List D, except Contact C: Smart List is A AND Smart List is D, AND Contact is not C.

Smart lists vs. segments

  • Smart lists are saved contact views you manage in Contacts and use throughout the platform.
  • Segments are built for email targeting and can combine smart lists, tags, contacts and engagement in one rule.
