Set Fallback Text for Custom Fields with Conditional Sending

Conditional sending shows or hides blocks in an email based on a contact's field values. You can use it to give custom fields a fallback, so contacts without a first name don't see "Dear ,".

Example: personalized greeting with a fallback

Goal: show "Dear {{contact.first_name}}," when the first name exists, or "Dear Customer," when it doesn't.
  1. Add the personalized block. Add a text block with Dear {{contact.first_name}},. In the block's sidebar, turn on Conditional Sending and set:
  2. Field: First Name
  3. Condition: Is Not
  4. Value: leave blank
This block only shows when First Name isn't empty.
  1. Add the default block. Add another text block with Dear Customer,. Turn on Conditional Sending and set:
  2. Field: First Name
  3. Condition: Is
  4. Value: leave blank
This block only shows when First Name is empty.
  1. Preview and test. Preview the email as a contact with a first name and as one without, and send yourself a test.
Use the same approach for any custom field, such as company name or city.
