WhatsApp Error: This Phone Number Is Already Registered to a WhatsApp Account
This error means the number you're connecting is already linked to a WhatsApp account.
Why it happens
- The number is active in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app.
- It's connected to another WhatsApp provider.
- It was recently disconnected, and WhatsApp is still processing it.
- It was used for WhatsApp before and hasn't been fully released.
Want to keep using the WhatsApp Business app? Use coexistence instead. See Connect WhatsApp to Your Account.
Fix it
1. Release the number
If it's on a phone:
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Account > Delete Account.
- Confirm by entering the phone number.
Deleting the account permanently removes chat history. Back up first.
If it's with another provider, ask them to fully release or delete the number from their platform.
2. Wait
Give WhatsApp up to 3 minutes, sometimes a little longer, to update. Don't retry over and over, as that can cause delays.
3. Try again
Go back to WhatsApp setup, enter the number, and verify it.
