Slack Triggers in Workflows

Slack triggers start a workflow when something happens in your connected Slack workspace. Use them to route requests, welcome new channel members, and alert your team about messages, mentions, and reactions. A Slack trigger starts the workflow, and Slack actions, such as posting a message, can do the work inside it.

Available triggers

| Trigger | Starts when | Setup | | --- | --- | --- | | New Reaction Added | Someone adds an emoji reaction to a message in a channel. | Pick the channel. | | New Direct Message | Someone sends a direct message to your connected Slack app. | Optional text and sender filters. | | User Invited to Channel | Someone joins or is invited to a channel. | Pick the channel. | | New Mention | Your Slack app is @-mentioned in a channel it has been added to. | Pick the channel. | | New Message Posted to Channel | A new message is posted in a public or private channel. | Pick the channel. |

Set up a Slack trigger

  1. Go to Automation > Workflows and open your workflow.
  2. Click Add Trigger, search for Slack, and choose the event.
  3. Select the connected Slack account. If you haven't connected Slack yet, finish the connection first.
  4. Name the trigger, then pick the channel or set the filters.
  5. Click Save Trigger and add your actions.

Map the trigger data

Mapping lets later actions use details from the Slack event, such as the message text or who sent it.
  1. In Slack, create an event that matches the trigger, for example post a message in the selected channel.
  2. Under Map your trigger, click Find new records.
  3. Pick a record. Its fields now show up as custom values in later actions.
  4. Publish the workflow, create another matching event in Slack, and check the Execution Logs to make sure the right steps ran.
If no records come back, check the connected account, channel, and filters, create another event, and click Find new records again.

Examples

  • Review requests: when someone reacts to a message in #content-review, post an update to #review-updates.
  • Welcome new members: when someone joins #customers, send them a welcome message.
  • Help desk: when someone sends your Slack app a direct message, create a task and notify the right person.
