How to Manage and Connect a Purchased Domain

This article covers connecting a domain you own at a registrar such as Cloudflare, GoDaddy, or Namecheap. Don't have a domain yet? You can buy one right in FunnelStreams under Settings > Domains & URL Redirects > Purchase/Transfer Domain. See "How to Buy a Domain in FunnelStreams." A domain you buy there connects without any DNS records at a registrar. Follow "Configure and Connect a Domain You Bought in FunnelStreams" instead.
A root domain looks like mydomain.com. A subdomain looks like www.mydomain.com or offer.mydomain.com. One hostname can point at only one place at a time. If mydomain.com already opens a site somewhere else, use a subdomain here, or move the DNS record.

Add the DNS record

Do this at the registrar, such as Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Namecheap, or wherever the domain is hosted. Use one of these two records, not both for the same hostname.
Subdomain with a CNAME. Create a CNAME for the subdomain and set the target to sites.ludicrous.cloud.
Root domain or subdomain with an A record. Create an A record and set the value to 162.159.140.166.
If the domain uses Cloudflare, set that record to DNS only. A proxied record will not connect. Use the proxied setting only when you are following a separate redirect setup that asks for it.
DNS can take a while to spread. If the domain does not connect right away, wait and try again. It can take up to 24 hours, and some registrars take up to 48 hours.

Add the domain in your account

  1. Go to Settings > Domains & URL Redirects.
  2. Click + Connect a domain. (On some accounts this button is labeled + Add Domain.)
  3. Find Funnel/Website/Store/Blog/Webinar and click Connect.
Click Continue to let FunnelStreams look up the registrar and add the DNS record for you. This works with GoDaddy, Cloudflare, IONOS, and other supported registrars. If the registrar is not supported, choose Add record manually and use the CNAME or A record above.
Root domain. Enter mydomain.com, not a subdomain, then choose the manual option if you are setting DNS yourself. The form can also add www and send www visitors to the root domain with a redirect. Leave that on unless you want the opposite redirect.
Subdomain. Enter the full subdomain, such as offer.mydomain.com, then add the record manually if needed.
To open a page at the bare domain (mydomain.com instead of mydomain.com/home), go to Settings > Domains & URL Redirects, click Manage next to the domain, open the three-dot menu on the connected product, click Edit, and choose a Default Page.

Attach it to a funnel or website

After the DNS record checks out:
  1. Choose the funnel or website.
  2. Choose the funnel step or website page that should be the default.
  3. Click Link Domain.
FunnelStreams creates the security certificate for you. You do not buy a separate certificate. The certificate can take a few minutes.
You can attach as many funnels and websites as you need to domains on this account. A hostname that is already used by a funnel or website cannot also be the address for memberships when those run on a different server. Use a subdomain for one of them.

Check the records

Use a public DNS lookup if you want to confirm the A or CNAME record. Search for the hostname and look for the record you added. A recent change may not show up until it has propagated.

Remove a domain

Go to Settings > Domains & URL Redirects and click Manage next to the domain. Open the three-dot menu, choose Delete, and confirm.

When something looks wrong

Privacy or certificate error. Common causes:
  • More than one A or CNAME record exists for that hostname. Keep one.
  • No DNS record was added.
  • An extra AAAA record is present beside the A or CNAME record.
"CNAME / A record not found." The record is missing, pointed at the wrong host, or still propagating. Confirm which registrar actually hosts the DNS, then add the record there.
404 on the bare domain. Go to Settings > Domains & URL Redirects, click Manage next to the domain, then edit the connected product and choose a default page. If one is already chosen, save it again.
404 on a path such as mydomain.com/home. The connected funnel or website needs that same path on the page. If the path is already there, remove the domain from the funnel or website, save, add it again, and save.
404 that comes and goes. You may be mixing www and the root domain. Add a redirect from one to the other.
Cloudflare still fails after the record looks right. Set the proxy to DNS only. A proxied record can hide images or block the domain from being added.
