Mail Loop Detected: Fix Email Routing Conflicts
What's happening
A mail loop happens when an email keeps bouncing between servers without ever being delivered. Servers detect this and stop it, returning messages such as:
- "Mail loop detected"
- "Too many hops"
- "Message has been forwarded too many times"
Common causes
- Forwarding rules that forward mail back to the original address
- Forwarding address in FunnelStreams set to an address that forwards back into FunnelStreams
- MX records pointing at the wrong server, or at each other
- Auto-replies between two mailboxes that keep answering each other
- A reply address that routes back to the sending address
Fix it
- Review forwarding. In Settings → Email Services → Reply & Forward Settings, make sure forwarding and BCC addresses don't forward back to your FunnelStreams inbox.
- Check mailbox rules in your email provider and remove any circular forwards.
- Check MX records for your domain. They should point only to your mail provider.
- Turn off auto-replies that answer automated mail, or add rules so they skip it.
- Send a test email and confirm it arrives once.
