Forbidden Message Categories for SMS and MMS in the US and Canada

Why carriers restrict content

US and Canadian carriers block certain content to protect consumers from illegal, harmful or fraudulent messages, and to keep business texting trusted. These rules apply to every business sending SMS or MMS from FunnelStreams.

Prohibited categories

  • Cannabis: cannabis, dispensaries, CBD products and related paraphernalia, even where legal locally.
  • Tobacco and vape: cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, vaping devices and liquids.
  • S.H.A.F.T. content:
  • Sex: adult content, escort services, sexual wellness products.
  • Hate: content promoting discrimination or violence.
  • Alcohol: alcohol sales and drink promotions.
  • Firearms: guns, ammunition and accessories.
  • Tobacco: as above.
  • Gambling and gaming: casinos, sweepstakes and betting.
  • Cryptocurrency and high-risk financial products: crypto offers, payday and high-interest loans, debt relief, credit repair and similar offers.
  • Pharmaceuticals and controlled substances: prescription drugs without a prescription and controlled substances.
  • Phishing and fraud: deceptive content, fake links and impersonation.
  • Illegal activities: anything promoting illegal products or services.
Some regulated categories may be allowed with age gating or extra vetting. When in doubt, don't send the content by SMS.

What happens if you send prohibited content

  • Messages may be blocked (often with error 30007).
  • Your A2P campaign or toll-free verification may be rejected or suspended.
  • Your number or account may be restricted.

Stay compliant

  • Review templates, workflows and campaigns for prohibited topics.
  • Choose an accurate use case when registering.
  • Use email or other channels for content carriers don't allow.
