Opt-In Methods and Their Compliance Requirements
Every SMS program must be backed by verifiable consent. These are the accepted opt-in methods and what each needs for A2P registration.
Website form
- A standalone consent checkbox, unchecked by default and optional.
- Clear consent language, for example: "Check this box to receive promotional text messages from [Company Name]."
- Frequency, "Msg & data rates may apply", HELP and STOP instructions.
- Links to your Privacy Policy and Terms.
- The form must be public so reviewers can see it.
Text-to-join (keyword)
- Advertise the keyword and number, for example "Text JOIN to (555) 555-0100."
- Show the consent disclosure wherever the keyword is advertised.
- Send a confirmation reply with business name, frequency, rates, HELP and STOP.
Verbal opt-in
- Use a script that states the business name, message types, frequency, rates and how to opt out.
- Record or log the consent with the date and time.
- Provide the script in your registration.
Paper or in-person forms
- Include the same consent language and an optional checkbox or signature line.
- Keep copies, and provide a sample in your registration.
QR codes
- The QR code should lead to a compliant web form or a pre-filled text-to-join message.
General rules
- Consent can't be a condition of purchase.
- Don't buy or share lists.
- Keep proof of consent for every contact.
